Yes, Brazil is the land of samba and the largest carnival on the planet, but they also have other musical genres, including the irresistible dance rhythm known as forró (pronounced FO-HOH). This accordion and percussion-based dance music is central to the Festa Junina, also known as festas de São João, for their part in celebrating the nativity of St. John the Baptist. These annual Brazilian celebrations take place in June and July and were introduced by the Portuguese during the colonial period. Celebrated throughout Brazil, the festival features the music, food, clothing and culture of the Northeast of the country.
